An anti-inflammatory gel is showing promise as a treatment for pain relief, said to have been used for more than a century.
In one study, it has been shown to help relieve pain by reducing inflammation.
The gel is the first topical, non-greasy treatment for pain and inflammation.
The FDA said that the drug is approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in children ages 6-16.
The new treatment, called Voltaren Emulgel, is based on the findings of a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in which patients with moderate to severe osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis received Voltaren Emulgel for four weeks in doses of 50-100 mg/d.
Researchers found that the gel helped relieve pain and inflammation in the joints of the body, including the arms and legs.

Voltaren Emulgel Extra Strength contains the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), diclofenac diethylamine. Diclofenac diethylamine works to relieve pain and reduce inflammation (swelling). The technology in Voltaren Emulgel Extra Strength helps the gel to penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver diclofenac diethylamine to the site of pain. Background:Pain can be difficult to identify because it often is not clearly defined. The use of a pain medication is limited, especially when it can be associated with a serious or disabling side effect, especially when it is used for non-specific pain or other treatment-emergent conditions. The authors investigated the use of Voltaren for the relief of musculoskeletal pain and acute pain following the administration of a topical gel for the management of chronic pain and to evaluate the analgesic effect of the topical formulation.
Methods:A retrospective analysis was conducted of patients who received a topical gel formulation for pain management, either as an oral or intravenous solution for a variety of conditions. The patients were assessed for their response to the gel. The topical gel formulation was used to relieve pain and to allow patients to use it for the management of acute pain in combination with other treatments. The topical formulation was used to provide a topical analgesic effect in the management of acute pain following the administration of a topical gel formulation.
Results:Twenty-eight patients were enrolled, and all of them were treated for musculoskeletal pain. The mean number of patients per treatment group was 3.4. Three patients in the oral group and two patients in the topical gel group achieved significant relief of pain, and one patient in the IV gel group was able to control their pain.
Conclusions:The topical gel formulation was an effective pain treatment in all groups, and the topical gel formulation had a more favorable safety profile for pain management than the oral gel formulation. The topical formulation was also safe and well tolerated.
